Mazzini, Giuseppe
► (1805-72) Político y escritor italiano. Partidario ferviente de la unidad de su patria, fundó una sociedad secreta, La Giovane Italia. La base de su pensamiento era la fe en un Dios que se revela en la historia como ley de progreso. La humanidad es la intérprete de este Dios: cada pueblo tiene una misión propia que cumplir de acuerdo con los destinos humanos.

Patriota italiano e importante figura en la creación de la Italia moderna. Abogado, se unió al grupo independentista clandestino de los carbonarios. Tras ser encarcelado por sus actividades, se trasladó a Marsella (1831), en donde fundó el movimiento patriótico Joven Italia. Más tarde amplió su plan de lograr una federación republicana mundial y en Suiza fundó la Joven Europa. En Londres (1837) continuó sus actividades revolucionarias por medio de la correspondencia con representantes en todo el mundo. Fundó la Liga Internacional de los Pueblos (1847) y recibió el apoyo de liberales ingleses. En 1848 regresó a Italia para ayudar a gobernar la efímera República de Roma, pero regresó a Inglaterra después de que el papa restableció su control en Roma. Fundó los Amigos de Italia (1851) y respaldó fallidas rebeliones en Milán, Mantua y Génova. Republicano intransigente, desaprobó el nuevo reino unido de Italia (1861). See also Risorgimento.
